Why Get Certified?

Each profession has its own professional standards.  IAPA has professional certification and recertification standards that must be met to become an IAPA Certified Activity Professional or Certified Activity Consultant.  The IAPA Certification Board hopes that you will join our ranks as a Certified Activity Professional or Activity Consultant, and will assist you to facilitate the process of being certified.

Get Certified

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:

  1.  Applicant must be a member in good standing.   Enclose a copy of IAPA Membership Card.
  2.  The Certified Activity Professional applicant MUST have completed a 36- or 42-hour basic Activity Director Course.  There is no time limit for when the course was taken, but documentation must be provided.  These course hours DO NOT COUNT toward the continuing education requirement (All Options criteria #3).
  3.  Complete one of the four options below.

OPTION ONE

  1.  High School Diploma or Equivalent.  Complete education section of application
  2.  Two years (4,000 hours – FTE) activities work experience attained within the last five years prior to application.  Complete work experience history section of application.
  3.  Thirty-five Continuing Education Clock Hours from “Body of Knowledge” (page 4) completed within three years prior to application.  Enclose copies of documentation (such as certificates) which verify the following information: Topic; Date; Location; Hours of instruction; Instructors Name and Credentials; Sponsoring Agency (if any)NOTE: If any of this information is not on the Certificate of Attendance, or if the topic title does not clearly reflect the Body of Knowledge List, attach a written explanation.

  OPTION TWO

  1.  Thirty (30) College Semester Units (One Year), including “Required Content Coursework” (page4).  Enclose transcript copies or have transcripts sent directly from college(s) to IAPA and complete education section of application.
  2. Two years (4,000 hours – FTE) activities work experience attained within the last five years prior to application. Complete work experience history section of application.
  3.  Thirty (30) Continuing Education Clock Hours from “Body of Knowledge” (page 4) completed within three years prior to application. Enclose copies of documentation (such as certificates) which verify the following information: Topic; Date; Location; Hours of instruction; Instructors Name and Credentials; Sponsoring Agency (if any).  NOTE:  If any of this information is not on the certificate of attendance, or if the topic title does not clearly reflect the Body of Knowledge List, attach a written explanation.

OPTION THREE

  1.  Sixty (60) College Semester Units (Two Years) including “Required Content Coursework” (page 4). Enclose transcript copies or have transcripts sent directly from college(s) to IAPA and complete education section of application.
  2.  Two years (4,000 hours – FTE) activities work experience attained within the last five years prior to application. Complete work experience history section of application
  3.  Twenty-five (25) Continuing Education Clock Hours from “Body of Knowledge” (page 4) Completed within three years prior to application. Enclose copies of documentation (such as certificates) which verify the following information:  Topic; Date; Location; Hours of instruction; Instructors Name and Credentials; Sponsoring Agency (if any).  NOTE: If any of this information is not on the certificate of attendance, or if the topic title does not clearly reflect the Body of Knowledge List, attach a written explanation.

OPTION FOUR

  1.  Bachelor’s Degree in a related field such as Art Therapy, Music Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Recreation and Leisure, Social Work, or Therapeutic Recreation.  If not in a related field, Bachelor’s Degree including “Required Content Coursework” (page4). Enclose transcript copies or have transcripts sent directly from college(s) to IAPA and complete education section of application.
  2.  Two years (4,000 hours – FTE) activities work experience attained within the last five years prior to application. Complete work experience history section of application.
  3.  Twenty (20) Continuing Education Clock Hours from “Body of Knowledge” (page 4) completed within three years prior to application.  Enclose copies of documentation (such as certificates) which verify the following information:  Topic; Date; Location; Hours of instruction; Instructors Name and Credentials; Sponsoring Agency (if any).   NOTE:  If any of this information is not on the certificate of attendance, or if the topic title does not clearly reflect the Body of Knowledge List, attach a written explanation.

Renew Certification

REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Must be a member in good standing of IAPA.  You must keep your membership current during the two years prior to certification renewal.
  2. CAP certificates must be renewed upon expiration. (Tip:  start the process in the quarter prior to expiration date).  You have a grace period of two (2) months after your expiration date to renew without penalty. After one (1) year from expiration, you must re-apply and meet the current standards in effect.
  3. CAP recertification requires 20 hours of continuing education.  Only 20% of the hours (4 hours) can be in-service hours.
  4. You must provide copies of the a certificate as proof of completion.  Certificates must include the topic, instructor’s name and credentials, date, location, number of hours, sponsoring agency, and be signed by the instructor of sponsoring agency.
  5. The $25.00 Renewal Fee is non-refundable. and must accompany the renewal form upon submission.  You have a grace period of two (2) months after your expiration date to renew. After this time you must pay a $30 Penalty in addition to the Renewal Fee of $25.
  6. Download, complete, sign, date, and submit the renewal form.
